Nigerian Girl

Dubai is full of diverse nations. Different people with different skin tones, languages, cultures and from different parts of the world. They all make a community in here. Mostly, people from more deprived countries around move here to make money. I’ve seen people chiefly from south and west of Africa, Morocco, Nigeria, Asian countries like Philippines, Pakistan, China and India who make living here holding low-level jobs. They can’t speak English very well and sometimes it makes challenge specially for someone like me as a person who has spent much of his life teaching English. Here’s a shot of a black girl who was from Nigeria and I asked her for a photo for I’m still a fond of dark-skinned people.

The boy in black 01

Twas a few days ago I went out for a walk. After 20 days of staying in Dubai, I finally felt I had the mood to carry my camera with me to shoot more of my undone project “The Story of Life”. On the way back to hotel, I found a few teenagers wandering around an ice cream stall, all black. I stepped forward to ask one of them for posing as a model for a shot. Here’s my first shot of a black guy in my whole life. He was from Nigeria. This photo will be an indication of my old devotion to this magical continent: Africa. I hope if one day I can make it to travel there, I’ll look back at this shot and tell myself: It’s been a long journey… but all in all, I made it.

The meaning of life may seem complicated for me from time to time and from person to person, though it is reflected as a simple story through the eyes of people. A scrambled puzzle of different pieces of people tending to form a colorful image as a whole.

Contrast

On a working day in a mall while we were setting things up to have another surprise event for a couple, my colleague called me hurriedly to move over to her. She pointed to the scene and asked me what I think about it. I seriously marveled at this out-of-this-world contrast. Being speechless, I just pulled out my camera which was fortunately equipped with 70-200mm lens and captured the scene.

While editing, I kept asking myself why do people fight with each other in a small planet like this which can be hidden behind Neil Armstrong’s thumb from the moon: “It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn’t feel like a giant. I felt very, very small,” he says when on moon.

People here dispute on skin color, religious beliefs, border lines, policy… people here take similarities for granted, they more tend to find differences and pick a small thing as a reason to isolate themselves. That’s why this shot means a lot to me.

What if we could see chunks as a whole? What if we could all be friends? I have to keep traveling to know more.

This girl was from Germany. We made friends through couch surfing website, and I invited her to my parent’s during her stay in my hometown. At that time, I was teaching English while was into getting to know more of western culture. I was looking forward to meeting people from around the world to become familiar with cultures around the world. As you might guess, she happened to become one of my weirdest experiences till that time. Contrasts between different cultures were what made me look more deeply into this life even up to now. Things that my people believed, thousands of kilometers away people weren’t even aware of their existence. It worked as a trigger for me to start thinking about cultural differences more and more. She did enjoy the excursion, by the way, that she took another trip to Hamedan the next year.

Here’s a portrait of Franzy in the old St Stephanos Gregorian Church in the Hegmataneh Hill complex, Hamedan, Iran. Hegmataneh is an old Hill where is believed that Ecbatana (an ancient city in Media in western Iran) was built in. According to Herodotus, Ecbatana was chosen as the Medes' capital in the late 8th century BC by Dia-oku. Under the Achaemenid Persian kings, Ecbatana, situated at the foot of Mount Alvand, became a summer residence. The wealth and importance of the city in the Persian empire is attributed to its location on a crucial crossroads that made it a staging post on the main East-West highway.

Men of the Sea 01

This kid was a great man of his own life. I met him at the port of Chabahar where all the fishermen were resting, waiting for the time to arrive to get back to work.

Chabahar is the capital of Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Iran. It is a free port (Free Trade Zone) on the coast of the Gulf of Oman, and is Iran's southernmost city.

He was allegedly working on his own boat. I was at my wits end how to manage a conversation with him as far as he was kind of a know-it-all kid in that age; “Uncle! Is life easy to handle where you live?”, he whispered in my ears, while I was busy on my camera. Twas the time I felt ashamed, went red and had literally nothing to reply. I thought maybe I, as a human being, have had all those drastic moments in my life since I was happy, I could go through most of them, but when I saw this kid, I knew I was wrong. He had to spend much of his time working instead of attending school to manage his family life. He knew all the details of fishing.

Sistan and Baluchestan is one of the most disadvantaged provinces in Iran despite all the natural resources it possesses as a key factor in tourist attraction. I can truly admit that I’ve never seen such an amazing and marvelous place like that until that time. It’s all virgin. Lands, coasts, gardens, mountains, even people… I felt sorry for the very disadvantaged and poor people of this land. One of the reasons could be a long nineteen-hour trip to the capital of the country. Check out another photo of a man-like boy of this area:

Deep Through His Eyes

Look deep into his eyes. On the project “The People,” I was out looking for charismatic faces to depict more of the natural sense of what I wanted my collection to bear. I was passing by a shoe store when I noticed this kid carrying pack on his back staring at shoes in a row right before the store window, sucking on a lollipop. I couldn’t express my feelings then; compassion, affection, or excitement?

The Color of Life

“The color of life,” I thought with myself when I pressed the shutter button on my camera. Never had the opportunity in my homeland to see an elderly person having the time of their life. It’s an excellent example of cultural differences. In my homeland, things are different, though. Religion plays a significant role in forming these types of differences. Variation of cultures of living also plays an important role. I was shocked at the first moment by seeing this old man from behind. “This is how an ideal life would go on,” I smiled. “to be in your seventies – probably – and still enjoy your twenties.”

Why are people different that much sometimes?

Ocean’s Kids

The day I arrived in Chabahar for the very first time, I left my baggage in the hotel room and decided to take a tour around. Few minutes passed by and I found myself before the great ocean. Paralyzed by the magnificence of the marvelous scene, I grabbed my camera and here’s the shot of the scene. It was the first time I was feeling the ocean air on my skin. Massive waves hitting rocks, making pleasant noises and elegant scenes. Mild wind touches tip of my fingers. Families sitting and lying on the beach, watching sinking sun, having chops of watermelon. Children playing around along the coast in the golden haze of sunlight.

How far should I go to let myself free? Would I ever dare to get enough far from the killing comfort my sedentary life has always granted me? The shot told me thousands of words in a blink of an eye. I want to get further, further enough to find myself. Been a year stuck in the ordinary days and nights, working hard, passing days by… but! Life with no exploration is no different to death. Many people are dead. Don’t want to be of them, though.

I would one day, for sure, leave everything and run toward the windy sea, toward my frights, barefoot and free. To see what the future holds.

Where to Find Serenity

Serenity. A notion I’ve been thinking about recently too much. Where to find, how to get to. Is it really in associate with happiness or not even in line with it? Sometimes I think inner peace has nothing to do with happiness at all. Still not too sure, but I suppose the source is laid behind our spirits which can’t be found outside. I’ve seen many people complaining about how bad their lives were due to the bad circumstances of their society. Many ones who would find fault with things to get rid of looking for it inside. I would never believe money would bring inner peace. Not a second. It might work as an accelerator, right, but that couldn’t mean it would bring peace together with itself.

When I was trying to capture this moment when everybody was apparently happy and calm by their beloved ones laying relaxed in the sun by the sea, I was truly thinking about the relation between prosperity and the inner peace. I was wondering if a utopia citizen, a modern human being, would benefit more of the inner peace than the Neanderthals back in history of life just because they are more comfortable now. I know people having only the very basic needs of life and still enjoy every single bit of it, on the other hand, we all know those well-off individuals who are not even satisfied with the most luxurious entertainments any longer.

Two Sides of the Ocean

The photo taken date differs this time to the date I’m writing for it. It’s damn crazy. Got back to my homeland, Iran a few days ago after a several months stay in Dubai, UAE. I had the opportunity to live there but I opted to get back. Things are getting worst in my country as a part of whole around the world due to the outbreak of this goddamn Corona Virus. My friends and family told me for thousand times it’s not a good time to get back, I couldn’t help staying there however – personal reasons. Now, I feel sorry for my people more than ever, for my magnificent country. I feel bad when I see how hard people here are struggling to survive. I’ve witnessed so many different lifestyles back there in UAE, from a beggar in the street who cried for a penny, to a woman who had bought a shop with whole its stuff and staff as a gift for her daughter’s birthday cz she had always dreamt of working in a shop. I saw, I learned and I experienced the whole thing. As the conclusion, people were happy in total with their lives to some good extent. Here in my country, on the other hand, things won’t go right, not even a mile. People have lost their hopes. They’re being slaughtered literally. This Corona Virus, out of nowhere, has taken their life challenges to a next level, bringing them death while walking in the street. Ain’t no clue if you’re alive a minute from now or dead.

The photo dates back to around six months ago when I took a trip to the southernmost province of my country, Sistan and Balouchestan – The most deserted, too. People here are more deprived in comparison with any other places in the country. I had my most monumental moments there. Kind people, incredible nature, and on the other hand, blatantly bad life-standard contrasts. The coastline visible in the photo is the one and only seashore in Iran where people can have the privilege of spending time near the ocean. Further on the other side of the ocean there is located Dubai, the UAE.

When I was pressing the shutter button here, I had no clue I’ll be traveling to Dubai in just a few weeks. Life seems way more unexpected sometimes than you ever imagine. Two sides of an ocean, two dark oppositions, two very different lifestyles, two different languages and two variant cultures. On this side, people sit across the ocean in veil in that boiling weather as part of their tradition – or maybe religion - and on the other side, people come from different countries to lay naked on the beach to benefit themselves from the hot sun over their bodies.

Simply Human Being

My marvelous hometown. Back in 2018, When I first decided to shoot random people, I told myself I’m gonna capture the local atmosphere of their lives and the most influential factor on them: Culture. Culture of living and why different people follow different sorts of etiquettes and rules based on where they live. I firstly started my project from the streets of my hometown and near villages. It was such incredible moments I spent taking photos of people around. It gives you the opportunity to talk to people, get to know them, make them identify with you and simply to be allowed to enter their private world. My camera acts like a certificate of one word: Humanity, which makes almost everyone feel secured to be emotionally touched. This is like a real privilege to me.

look back at every single photo I’ve taken through these years from people and the story behind begins to be reviewed in my mind. That’s what photography is for.
